Great violin masterclass with prof. ivan Straus
and with the opportunity to play with the orchestra
February 10 – 13, 2025

Special 4-day solo violin masterclass with the legendary Czech violinist and professor Ivan Štraus in beautiful SPA city Karlovy Vary will take place from February 10 to 13, 2025. The masterclass will focus on concert violin masterpieces. 6 selected violinists will work with Prof. Ivan Štraus on pieces selected from the repertoire list below. The repertoire is focused on concert violin pieces. 2 selected students will play with a professional orchestra in a public concert in the new large concert hall. This masterclass is special thanks to the cooperation with conductors from the conducting masterclass. Violinists can share experiences and gain a conductor’s perspective on a concertos and concertante pieces.

All students will have the opportunity to perform at a chamber concert, where they will play their chosen pieces with professional piano accompaniment.

Participants will have 3 lessons with Prof. Ivan Štraus accompanied by a professional pianist Prof. Stanislav Bogunia. The afternoon chamber concert of all participants will be held on the last day. Two selected students will perform a solo piece of their choice in an evening public concert with the symphony orchestra.

The student receives analytical feedback from the lecturer during the lessons . The professional final concert with symphonic orchestra will be recorded on video and audio for further study purposes, competitions and masterclasses.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation (including passive participants).

Repertoire for lessons with prof. Štraus:

Concertos by:
Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Glazunov, Prokofiev No. 1 and No. 2, Dvořák, Lalo’s Spanish Symphony, Martinů Concerto No. 2 and other solo concertante pieces.

Repertoire for performance with an orchestra (It will also be prepared during lessons with Professor Štraus):
Henryk WieniawskiPolonaise Brillante (Polonaise de Concert), Op. 4
or
Camille Saint-SaënsIntroduction et rondo capriccioso, Op.28
Each participant can choose one of these two compositions.

Participants will prepare a piece/pieces in advance from the proposed repertoire, or from their own choice from the concertos and concertante pieces. It is possible to learn everything. Participants will get their own scores.

In 4 days, the masterclass includes:
• 3 active classes about 60 minutes
• Each lesson with a professional piano accompanist
• 2 selected participants will perform as soloists in a final concert with a professional orchestra
• Attendance at all meetings and rehearsals
• All participants will receive all videos from lessons and concerts together with professional photos
• Presentation of certificates of completion of the course (including passive participants)

About

Ivan štraus

is a violin virtuoso and professor at the Academy of Musical Arts in Prague. Ivan Štraus is the recipient of numerous awards and is a laureate and finalist of several important world competitions – Jacques Thibaud in Paris, Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, he also won 1st prize in the international competition Prix Musicale de Radio Brno for the radio play Bolero. In 1964 he also received the Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cross for his recording of Berg’s Chamber Concerto for Violin, Piano and Winds. In the same year he won the important Prague Spring competition. In 1966 he received the Academy Charles Cross Prize. In 1968-1979 he was a member of the Czech Trio, and since 1979 he was the principal of the Suk Quartet, and as a soloist he has performed with various orchestras at home and abroad. After studying at the Prague Conservatory and HAMU, he studied as a post-graduate student at the Moscow Conservatory with E. Gilels and in 1968 he was selected as a teacher at HAMU in an audition, in 1975 he was dismissed for political reasons and worked at the conservatory at the Pardubice Conservatory. Since 1990 he has been a professor at AMU. Ivan Štraus is a prominent performer of solo and chamber music, dedicated to contemporary music and its popularization. For many years he was the chairman of the international Kocian violin competition. Currently, in addition to his teaching activities at HAMU, he also teaches at the Interpretation Courses in Litomyšl. In addition to concerts and teaching, he is dedicated to performing the works of Bohuslav Martinů. He is also active in radio work, having recorded several parts of Fates – “remembering Ivan Štraus”, in which he looks back on his rich professional life full of various vicissitudes, twists and happy returns.

The winter symphonic masterclass takes place in a beautiful city Karlovy Vary which is well known as a art and architecture city full of many surprising views and mountains nearby. The greatest speciality is a space for rehearsals which is a new concert hall in the Imperial Spa. Karlovy Vary offers many accommodation options in beautiful spaces (everyone pays for their own expenses). There are also many extraordinary restaurants and cafes. The entire masterclass is professionally organized by the Koutnik Academy and Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra.

The Czech Republic has many professional orchestras at a high level. The Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra is one of the best professional full size orchestras in the Czech Republic.
